Running out of one color halfway through a design is frustrating, but you do not need exact math for every project. A simple estimate will help you prepare without overthinking it.
Count the grid, not the container
Look at the widest and tallest parts of the design. If a motif is about ten beads wide and ten beads tall, it can use up to one hundred beads before you subtract open spaces. This gives you a quick upper limit.
Estimate by color area
Count large color sections first. A solid background may take half the piece, while eyes, spots, or outlines may only need a few beads each. Add a small buffer for dropped beads and last-minute changes.
Use a test layout
For small projects, build the design on the board before sorting every bead into separate piles. You can see immediately which colors are being used quickly and refill only those colors.
Keep a project note
When a design works, write down its grid size and the main colors. The next time you make a similar coaster, keychain, or magnet, you will have a useful starting estimate.
